The English Corner. Lent Part II, or the chain effect: Typical gastronomy, costumes and characters

 Dear followers, we keep on enjoying the Lent. And now it is time to get deep on it, knowing some of its most remarkable aspects.
On the one hand we have the typical gastronomy that, in our beloved town, and in almost every house, we can enjoy during these days. Homes, and even streets, gain this familiar smell, that makes anyone of us remember our childhood, and, unavoidably, to know that, once more, Lent has arrived.
Typical gastronomy, costumes and characters
Gajorros and pestiños
The most famous desserts in the world. Simply like this.
Two different kinds of pastes fried and seasoned with sugar. The one who has never tried them, has not lived life. The rest of the seasoning that makes them confer their traditional and enviable flavor are sesame, cinnamon or anisette.
Torrijas. Torrijas, like french toast, prepared with honey, eggs and white wine. A typical food prepared during Easter.
Beans with ham
Kind of fried beans with onion and ham. Achtuhng! Do not eat on Lent Fridays, it is not allowed to eat meat. Another jewel of our gastronomy, typical in these days, also in the Head Quarters.
Cod
Fish, that means, allowed to be eaten in Lent. Parents love it, when you are a child they persuade you to eat it, when you grow up, they have to hide it for you not eat it all.
Characters
The peanuts guy
Especially admired, respected, and loved for those who like to take pictures. They love him so much that would be able to pay him a holidays in Torremolinos during Easter. His character makes him to provide also with big balloons that kids and drunks cry in the same way for having one, trumpets, drums, and the typical “cañadú”.
Costumes
Abejorros
Old fashioned kinf ot trompet that makes a weird sound, announcing the march of the “Pasos”. Like in the case of “capuchones”, another name is intimately linked to this playing of the trump. Frasky, this friend of everyone has played with great maestry during centuries the “abejorros”, has also created a school, and in some websites, specialists already speak about the “Frasky Style”. Some rumors talk about his participation in the next “Rose Dance” at Monaco.
“Capuchones”
Capirotes / capuchones as they are known in Cabra, the pointed or cone shaped hood worn by the capuchones (worldwide known as nazarenos, except in Cabra), symbolizing repentance and grief. They are members of the Brotherhood, who dress in a robe and cone shaped hood to hide his or her identity. Some “capuchones” from particular processions are prohibited from speaking with anyone once dressed in their gown and cap. Colors of robes and hoods depend on the procession.
In Cabra, a name is intimately linked to this tradition. I wish God permits having him such a lot of time with us, Manolo Fernandez, who has made all the “capuchones” to all of us, and our cousins who came from Madrid (in previous chapters called “apuraorzas”).
The apostles
Masks representing the twelve apostles who accompanied Jesus Christ. These apostles have terrified all us when we were little children. Whether we overcome this horrible memory, you were prepared to become a “capillita”. Nowadays, masks have been restored, and they are so much beautiful. Where is it going to stop.
The Parade
The famous Parade that used to be celebrated on Holy Friday. This old tradition got in misuse a few years ago because of the impolite behavior of some of the spectators. The three “Cofradias” that makes their processions this afternoon, made a parade in the streets of Cabra, announcing that the processions were about to happen. Procession and parades, are accompanied by music, “marchas” that are dedicated to the sacred images. In the parade, the Music Band of Cabra played one of the most traditional “marchas” in the town, “Cruz Parroquial”, while the “Cofradias” were passing by.
